If your child or young person (0-15 years old) needs to go to the Emergency Department you must now go to the new Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP) at:

Please enter via Gate 2 and the dedicated RHCYP emergency department entrance, NOT the main hospital doors. Information on how to  get there can be found here.


Please be aware the Emergency Department does not provide the following:



  • Telephone advice
  • Treatment of minor illnesses
  • Second opinions on pre-existing conditions

When we are closed medical advice can be found in the following ways: 

  • Often your local pharmacist can provide advice and treatment, particularly for minor ailments such as coughs and colds. 
  • The Minor Injuries unit at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh is also open every day of the year, seven days a week, from 8am to 9pm (with the last patient book-in at 8.30pm). No appointment is necessary. Information about the services this unit provide can be found here
